There are many options when evaluating microscopes, in fact D.M.I. provides literally thousands of different configurations of optical microscope systems. So how do we help our customers make an informed best choice? The first question is of course what needs to be studied or measured. It is best to define the answer to that simple question in terms of the object itself, how it will be visualized and what are the important details that need to be seen. We tend to focus on the way that the object could be treated, using the best visualization technique to give the best analysis of the important properties of the object. We also place a lot of emphasis on the users requirements for ease of use. Another important consideration is the availability of digital systems and automation to make the microscopic analysis reproducible, quantitative and fast. There are many details in microscopy that may seem initially confusing but in fact are quite simple and standardized. Our sales staff is trained to make those details easy for the customer to understand and relate to their work. If you would like a primer and additional information on the basics of microscopes, optics, specifications and nomenclature, please see our education page.
Some applications have extremely well defined requirements and fairly standard configurations. Typically the selection of a microscope for those applications will come down to the quality of the optics, the type of illumination best suited for the sample and the durability and quality of the overall microscope. Despite what may be said elsewhere it is still true that the best microscopes do cost more. They are simply easier to use, will give more years of quality imaging with less maintenance and headaches. For infrequent users, hobbyists and students we also offer economy systems.
At D.M.I., we also know that where you purchase your laboratory equipment makes a big difference. This is also true of microscopes. While there are more and more microscopes being sold every day, there are fewer and fewer trained microscopists. Having the opportunity to spend a few hours with a trained professional from D.M.I. will make your experience in microscopy much more enjoyable and productive. Our personal service will not only ensure you get an instrument properly configured for your work, but that you know the proper set up, for each type of sample and use the instrument to its best possible performance. We also offer on-site courses for education and industry. Please see our support page for further information.
Finally, and possibly most importantly is the price of the equipment. It would be nice if everyone had a budget for the most advanced instrument available. We carry automated digital microscopes pre-configured to automatically recognize each sample and make every adjustment from Koehler illumination to final focus, and deconvolve the full 3 dimensional structure and kinetics of the object in a matter of seconds with no operator involvement. Then again we also carry microscopes that provide the similar optical quality with a few important choices in configuration that cost less than half the price, and we train the users to obtain the same quality results. Never the less it is important to understand the difference between an economy scope and a quality scope.
D.M.I. can configure a system to your exact needs and your budget. As a first step it is often helpful to make a chart of the analysis requirements to make the choice of your microscope more clear.
